Quadcopter how many channels?
A RC or quadcopter transmitter can have anywhere from 4 to 9 channels. Four is the least number of channels required to fly a quadcopter. Each channel refers to a particular frequency the transmitter and the receiver use to communicate with each other. And each channel allows you – the operator – to control one particular kind of movement of your quadcopter.
For example:
- Channel 1 = throttle
- Channel 2 = rotation
- Channel 3 = moving forward and backward
- Channel 4 = strafing right and left
With 5 channels – which is the minimum recommended by many, you also get an additional channel that allows you to switch between two possible flying modes, such as Altitude Hold \ Return Home \ GPS \Waypoint Navigation etc.

But if you plane to diy a quadcopter for Aerial Photography or other models,5 or more channels is suited for you. With more channels, you will be able to make fuller utilization of all the hardware in your quadcopter. For the best flying experience, 7 to 9 channels are preferable – but then this piece of advise is only for expert level flyers and not beginners.
How many channels do you need for a quadcopter
How many channels you need in your transmitter is totally dependent on what your quadcopter requires and what you want to do with it. Make sure your transmitter supports at least as many as your craft requires and you’ll be fine. You can’t go wrong buying a transmitter with more channels than your receiver has. If you are starting off with a simple craft and expect to buy something bigger and better down the road you may wish to buy a controller with five or six channels to accommodate a quadcopter you expect to get in future.
While 4 channels is enough for the basic flight of most planes, helicopters, and quadcopters, the more will do what you need to do unless you get into cameras and gimbals along with GPS etc.So I think you ought to seriously consider what’s the purpose of your quadcopter. Do you think so?
